SOCIAL APPROACHES TO INTERACTION Social approaches investigate communication as inherently collaborative, as joint constructions of meaning, and as embedded in a particular social or cultural context. They often emphasize the element of creativity in interaction, the interplay between old and new, the ways in which innovation mixes with tradition. Researchers look to various social identities and roles, and how they respond to the inventions and displays of others. A wide variety of theoretical and/or methodological approaches are included under this rubric, the majority of which are appropriately described as qualitative, interpretive, or critical rather than quantitative. Books in this series will focus on face-to-face communication in context as the most central case of what constitutes communication. Any context is potentially appropriate, including but not limited to family, relationships, organizational and health settings. Although it is assumed that the presentation and analysis of data will be central to the majority of the offerings, solely theoretical or methodological works will also be considered.
