This book presents a metatheory for explaining communication theories. The authors identify three communication paradigms: symbolic, relational, and rational. The book focuses on three theories contributing to the Symbolic Paradigm constellation of theories: Bormann’s Symbolic Convergence Theory, Burke’s Dramatism Theory, and Fisher’s Narrative Theory. An 8-step metamethod for using communication theories to solve clients’ problems is presented and explained. Additionally, the ethical responsibilities of an applied communication researcher and suggestions to the novice on how to get started in the profession are offered.
