The first edition of Real Law@Virtual Space was written about a nascent medium and the body of law beginning to emerge from it. It explored the regulatory developments of cyberspace during its formative period in which the gap between new technologies and old laws widened. Also, the first edition provided an introduction to approaches to regulation, particularly from the perspectives of initiative and reactions within the legal system of the United States. Specifically, it addressed the earliest forays into the unique legal challenges raised by traditional areas of civil and criminal law brought into cyberspace. Libel, copyright, intellectual property, obscenity, pornography, sexual harassment, privacy, criminality and jurisdictional issues were considered. This second edition reflects the maturation of the new media environment brought on by the Internet. A body of legislative measures and case law can now be traced to reveal patterns of jurisprudential wisdom. In the intervening years more people have migrated to cyberspace. Digitalization is at the heart of convergence with the Internet being the primary transmission medium or platform. The convergence of technology has led to the need for regulatory convergence. While some questions have been addressed, many others, perhaps more complex, emerge daily as a result of convergence. The second edition reflects the legal implications of the reality of a post September 11th world.Preface. Legal Geography: Changing Borders of Cyberlaw: Introduction. OVERVIEW.
