| The revised version of this popular text is specifically concerned with communication in the electronic environment known as cyberspace. The volume is divided into four sections, the first of which is devoted to essays that provide theoretical contexts, broad overviews, and general criticism of computing and cyberspace as communication phenomena. Section Two consists of discussion and research on cyber networks and cyberspaces. Section Three brings together studies of new senses of space and navigation, or cybernetics. This includes examinations of virtual reality, and the perception of immersion generated by cyberspace technologies, as well as hypertext and hypermedia as new forms of nonlinear space and new methods of steering through the electronic landscape. Section Four consists of examinations of cyber communication and cyber culture including the codes and modes of communication associated with communication in cyberspace, and the new cultural formations, such as altered notions of self, the body, and sexuality; relationships, community and affiliation; and space, time, and reality. Each section begins with a brief introduction that helps to identify the relationships among the section's chapters; each chapter has its own introduction, which also points to relationships with chapters in other sections.Year: 2003Pages: |
