| Visual impact, as conceptualized in this book, is the use of imagery to stir feelings and influence human actions. Visual messages can have an impact on a viewer on a number of levels that are not always understood. A concern of the contributors is the impact of visual messages, including advertising, art, the environment, and visual journalism on various viewing audiences. Moreover, chapters examine the impact of visual messages on individuals and culture.
To date, no single approach has been utilized in the examination of the conscious and unconscious impact of visual messages. This book provides examples of how visual communication scholars have applied a number of techniques to better understand the impact of visual messages on attitudes and behaviors. It goes beyond the traditional rhetorical approach to visual communication and presents both the conscious and unconscious levels of visual impact.
